I was given a project to do a book illustration of a story "The Reluctant Dragon". I chose to illustrate what a Japanese version would be, and here are the sketches and the final of the boy, the dragon, and the samurai. I wanted to paint this somewhat flat, but I was afraid it might look too flat on one layer, so I decided to put more than one layer to get some depth. It was harder than I thought to paint on acrylic paper pads.. and it sure wasn't easy to cut out those delicate lines.. I had to really focus on the tip of the knife so I didn't even realize that I had cut my finger until my finger was covered with blood, which I thought was a red acrylic paint!! But I enjoyed crafting in spite of the pain :)
